Master Dôgen (1200-1252), founder of the Sôtô school of Japanese Zen and author of Shôbôgenzô, is also a monk-poet whose talent is expressed in the collection of waka entitled Sanshô-Dôei, literally "Praise of the Way at the Summit of the Umbrella Pine”. In this work, Dôgen expresses another facet of his personality, his secret garden, where you can feel a uniquely Japanese sensibility and the influence of the traditional Shintô religion. This reference work presents a complete and commented translation of all of these poems as well as an introduction to the links between Zen and poetry. An enlightening stylistic study gives access to a finer understanding of this poetic universe. Yoko Orimo is the translator of Shôbôgenzô (complete bilingual edition in 2019) for which she received a medal from the Académie des Belles-Lettres in 2020, as well as the special prize for translation from the Konishi Foundation in 2021.
