Namdaemun ("Great South Gate"), real name Sungnyemun ("Gate of Lofty Ceremonies"), is one of the eight gates of the Seoul Wall, South Korea, which surrounded the city during the Dynasty. Joseon. The gate is located in Jung-gu district, between Seoul Station and City Hall Square (Seoul Plaza), near Namdaemun Market. Namdaemun was the main gateway to Seoul in the Middle Ages. Built in 1398 during the reign of the sovereign Taejo, it was rebuilt in 1447 during the 29th year of the reign of Sejong the Great1. It was ranked first on the Korean National Treasures List.
