The Forbidden City, generally called by the Chinese the ancient palace, also called the palace museum is the imperial palace within the Imperial City of Beijing whose construction was ordered by Yongle, third emperor of the Ming dynasty, and carried out between 1406 and 1420. This palace, of unequaled size - it covers an area of 72 hectares - is one of the oldest and best preserved palaces in China. Nowadays, it has become a museum, the palace museum, which preserves the imperial treasures of ancient Chinese civilization and a large number of Chinese works of art of prime importance: paintings, bronzes, ceramics, musical instruments, lacquers, etc.
