The Nikkō Tōshō-gū is a tōshōgū-type Shinto shrine located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is located near the city of Nikkō, in the Nikkō National Park. It is also one of the shrines and temples of Nikkō. There are wise monkeys.
Tōshō Shrine was built in 1617 by Tokugawa Hidetada, then shogun in title, to honor one of the last wishes of his father Tokugawa Ieyasu, first shogun of the Edo period and founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1636, Tokugawa Iemitsu enlarged the holy place which took the form which, since 1999, has made it one of the historic sites listed as a World Heritage Site.
