Description
Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) was a renowned Japanese artist of the Edo era, famous for his talents in painting, calligraphy and ukiyo-e. His tumultuous life was marked by varied influences, including his apprenticeship with the ukiyo-e master Kuniyoshi, his political involvement and his bold and often satirical artistic style.
His work is characterized by a wide diversity of subjects, ranging from traditional portraits and landscapes to illustrations of folk tales and scenes from everyday life. Kyosai was also known for his subtle humor and innovative approach to visual representation, using expressive techniques such as yomihon and kôkokuhanga. His contributions have influenced many modern and contemporary Japanese artists.
