Katsushika Hokusai, 1760-1849

The most famous Japanese artist of Japanese printmaking in the Edo period (1600-1868), Katsushika Hokusai, is the author of a world-famous work: The Great Wave off Kanagawa (circa 1830) which part of the equally famous Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Hokusai also made himself famous with his erotic or fantastic prints as well as his sketchbooks called "Hokusai manga".
The discovery of his prints was an aesthetic shock for European artists at the end of the 19th century.
